About York University

A public research university located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, York University is also referred to as simply YU or by its abbreviated name, YorkU. It is the fourth-largest university in Canada, with a total enrollment of approximately 55,700 students, 7,000 faculty and staff members, and more than 325,000 graduates living all over the world.

The York University Act was passed into law in 1959, paving the way for the establishment of York University as an institution that is not affiliated with any particular religious group. On March 26 of that same year, the Act received royal assent in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Falconer Hall, located on the campus of the University of Toronto, was the location of the institution's very first class, which took place in September 1960 with a total of 76 students.


In the fall of 1961, York University relocated to its first campus, which was leased from the University of Toronto and named Glendon College. It was there that the university began to place an emphasis on liberal arts and part-time adult education. A second campus of the university, known as the Keele Campus, was established in North York in 1965. This campus is located within the community that is now known as York University Heights.
